A final Emmy note

Dear Office Staff,

Considering that you provided some of the funniest moments of the show tonight — from Rainn, Jenna, and John begrudgingly singing the praises of Steve Carell, to Rainn handily winning a rap-off against Kanye West, to Greg’s sweet acceptance speech, to Steve, Jon, and Stephen’s hug for joy;

Considering that many, many of your fans camped out at OfficeTally tonight, and we watched the show and shared in the laughter you provided throughout, as well as commiserated over the losses;

Considering that nearly 400 comments were posted tonight;

You are the best comedy on TV, without question. Your fans adore you.

As Tallyhead Angelica so eloquently puts it: “While I am very sad for the horrendous losses suffered by our favorite Office folks tonight, with or without the Emmys, we still have the best show on television with the most gracious and talented cast around.”

Signing off at 1:40am PT,
:) Jennie

  1. Wow, I got choked up reading the last part. Every word is true and I hope they know we love them all and they did a great job making the Emmy show funny and everyone looked so good!

  2. tanster, you are way more gracious than I am. I would like to echo that The Office is imho the best comedy with the best writing, directing and acting on tv. I want to thank the cast and crew for the pleasure they bring to me and to others every week.

  3. while The Office may have been better and more consistent overall, I’m willing to throw a bone at 30 Rock, which I would rank as a strong 2nd to The Office, and even better in certain episodes. If winning this emmy can help keep 30 Rock on the air longer, then it is worth it overall.

  4. Amen :) Bring on the 27th!

P.S. Seriously though, how did Rainn not win? Obviously a majority of the voters have yet to watch this show…

  5. Yes – Office cast you have to know that although some of you may have not won an Emmy YOU all made the Emmy’s!

Congrats to you for being the BEST everything on TV!

    Big Hug from Australia :)

  6. They were the only reason I watched all those hours of Emmy footage. They were robbed, but in my heart – they won everything (even if they weren’t nominated).

  7. Amen, Tanster. Amen.

What’s the old addage? If you’re not enough without one, you’re never enough with one? That sounds right. But I think it refers to Olympic medals. So it doesn’t really apply.

Seriously, you folks have to know what your show means to the gaggles of fans you have around the world. In the Electric City alone, the business of Dunder Mifflin put our sleepy- or heavily sedated- city on the map. It was always on maps, though. Some people needed to know where it was. But now more people care. I mean really, really care. So thank you for that… luxury.

And thank you for continuing to put forth honest, realistic, brilliant work season after season. Empathy is such an important device in comedy- like I have to point that out to you- but you have created these characters that we not only feel for, but that we feel a part of. Not dirty or inappropriately a part of. But really, a cast and crew so devoted to giving the best and one that continues to respect and thank their fans is one worth holding on to.

Plus, Dundies are sleeker trophies anyway. Probably even realer gold.

  8. Well said. Except I think ‘horrendous’ is a strong word to use, no? I mean, it stinks that they didn’t win, but I think they lost out to good talent (at least it wasn’t Charlie Sheen winning the Emmy). I mean, losing an Emmy award is not something I’d consider a ‘horrendous’ event. It’s just an awards show–one that did recognize The Office last year–and there is always next year. At least we got a lot of nominations and at least people got to see how funny the cast is on the various spots last night–the only bright spots of the entire presentation.

  9. Well put. I think if the Emmys were voted on by the fans, we all know The Office would have swept every category. I would have loved to see Steve, Rainn, Jenna and all the other nominees win, but I hope they consider the outpouring of love and support from their fans and hold their head high. Best comedy on TV is not an exaggeration, it’s an understatement. And tanster, thank you so much for providing us dunderheads a home. We praise The Office without question, but all your hardwork enhances our experience ten fold. Between The Office and you tanster, we are the luckiest fans in the world. Are we not, are we not, are we not? Are you with me, are you with me? Thank you very much.

  10. Wonderful note to The Office folks, Jennie! I’m sure they know that they still have the best jobs in the world, even without the awards, and I know they’ll continue to make the show the best show out there. They truly are the best cast and crew of any TV show and not getting another gold statute certainly doesn’t change that. Just think – we have a new season starting in just over a week to get excited about anyway! And besides, as a lifelong Cubs fan, I’ve definitely learned the meaning of “Wait till next year!”. :)

  11. We all need to remember that these are just awards for TV shows. As Jon Stewart said so beautifully, maybe we really don’t need hours and hours of ceremonies where the rich and famous congratulate each other for being so rich and famous.

The cast and crew of The Office make the kind of TV show they want to see on television, and isn’t usually on television, and have an incredibly devoted fanbase because of it. I would like to think they would trade all the pointy statues in the world for that.

With that said, I would still love to give a big consolation hug to Jenna Fischer for her loss.

  12. Beautifully written, tanster! “The Office”, Steve, Jenna, Rainn and everyone involved with the show are the winners in our hearts.

  13. Amen Tanster! Thanks for summing up everyone’s thoughts so beautifully.

I personally gotta echo #18 mg714’s thoughts…. as a life-long Cubs fan I was very quick to say and completely believe in the phrase “Next Year!” Anyways I bet those trophys are heavy and annoying to have at the after parties anyways :P Seriously though, you know everyone on cast was too thrilled for Greg to really dwell on it last night anyways, and they probably had a great time at the after parties regardless.

On a side note, I was one of those in the OTCR for hours last night and I gotta say… that was one of the most fun times I’ve had watching an awards show… especially commenting on everyone’s clothes! (John’s tux description of “sex with legs” is still cracking me up today) The Office folks did provide the BEST moments of the night! I’m kinda sad that I might not be in the chat for the 27th now! :)

  14. Staff of the Office,

Even though the performance side of the competition was a complete disappointment, we should all be happy about the awards won for writing (no one in television comes close), broadband comedy and single-camera editing. In a world of haters, the Office didn’t come away empty-handed, even though we fans feel a heartbroke.

Tanster, as always you say things beautifully.

  15. Tanster, that was beautiful and I have to agree wholeheartedly. “Word”, even.

And like John said, they’re family. So, they’re probably laughing it off together right now like the family they are.

  16. Thanks for that great letter. While I am still sad over the losses I agree that we don’t need any awards to know the office is the best show out there with the best cast and crew in tv! Thanks for all the work you put in tanster.

  17. Here, here!

We never watch award shows (and 99% of last night reminded me why!), but watched last night because of The Office nominations.

I so wanted Jenna, Rainn, and Steve to win. Oh well. Isn’t the 27th ever going to get here?!?!?

  18. To the cast and crew of The Office: Thank you for all of the hard work you all put into the show. Your fans adore all of you and just know that your work is appreciated. Thanks for all the joy you bring every Thursday night!

  19. I 100% agree. I love this show, and most of all, I love this cast and crew. I feel as if I know them.

  20. Office staff –

Your show is the prettiest show of all the shows. In the Melody Awards, you sweep every category, even Best Variety, Music, or Comedy Show, because come on – Dundie awards ceremony, hello.

I grant that the Melody Awards seem to be less coveted than the Emmy Awards, but that’s the industry’s fault. Not mine.

You all have created a show around which a community has formed. We celebrate and connect and laugh together because of your work. That’s a great gift you’ve given to us. It’s no wonder we all feel so indignant about your not taking home more trophies, because I think we wish that you all would have a tangible thank you for all of this.

For now, I give you my pixelated outpouring of love. Thanks for everything. You really are the best.

  21. awesome! the office is just amazing and will be my fav show for all time!!

and i love how we are all one big office family! :D

  22. I think it’s safe to say the Office folks stole the show last night even if they didn’t win the big ones. They definitely provided the best laughs and that’s what counts right? ;P

We all know they were deserving. Everyone else will figure it out at some point. =)

  23. Hey office staff,
Anything loved by tons and tons of people is always called into question by the critical establishment – If everyone loves it, it must be banal, lowest common denominator, unintelligent, etc. However, in the case of this excellently put together, blindingly intelligent show, they are wrong. You are making an excellent, entertaining, heartfelt, groundbreaking piece of television, and when 30 rock is canceled next season (don’t get me wrong, 30 rock is another one of my favorites) and you are still pulling in awesome ratings, you will meet your new challenges head on and you will succeed. And you will laugh in the face of those who doubt you.

In other words I’m quitting. (not really.)

  24. I can’t agree more with what you said tanster, “You are the best comedy on TV, without question. Your fans adore you!” This really does sum up how I feel!

  25. Chillisbannedme–Glad I could make you laugh! Haha

OTCR definitely made the show memorable and bearable. Thanks, as always, for such a wonderful site, Tanster, and thanks, OTers, for a fabulous community!

  26. The only reason I watched last night was for the Office crew, and even though they did not come out on top where they MOST deserved to (I’m looking at you Steve Carell), the Office people did provide the best moments of the evening! Can’t wait until the 27th! LOVE YOU GUYS!

  27. And let’s not forget that people connected to The Office won – Conan O’Brien and Ricky Gervais! And I’m sure Steve ran away with Ricky’s Emmy, so it’s kind of like he won. ;)

  28. Awesome letter!!

I don’t need an emmy to decide which show is my favourite!!

We all still LOVE The Office!!

Plus c’mon Rain and Steve stole the show!!!!

  29. The only reason I watched last night was to see The Office cast win. I’m pretty sad over the losses, but it’s still my favorite show. I can’t wait until next week!

  30. Very well said, Tanster. Though I’m gonna have to say, The Office isn’t just the best comedy on TV, it’s the best show on TV. Period.

And a big thank you to all the cast and crew of The Office that continue to make the show so great. You guys rock!

  31. I recall that Jenna Fischer has mentioned in her blog how much she likes 30 Rock and admires Tina Fey. I doubt she and The Office crew have anything but affection for 30 Rock, and with the two shows airing back to back, I’ll be rooting for 30 Rock’s ratings to improve, at least for the sake of a solid “lead in” for The Office. :)

I have to admit I haven’t been able to “get” 30 Rock, or My Name is Earl (in terms of the humor) though. I’ll give those both another try this season.

  32. Well said, tanster! I wholeheartedly agree.

The Office folks surely did steal the show, even if they didn’t all win. They were the ONLY entertaining aspect, actually. If it hadn’t been for their bits, I would have fallen asleep. It was a lackluster dud in general. (And I really hated the stage-it felt like a Celine Dion concert, not an awards show.)

But seeing them all there was a treat. Steve, Rainn, John and Jenna were just priceless. When Steve bumrushed Stewart and Colbert, I was so happy! What a fun reunion! And I’m totally thrilled for Greg Daniels.

And hey-who the hell needs the Emmys when you have THE DUNDIES?!!! We’ve already won! ;)

  33. Let me echo this sentiment on this board — the emmys really horrible — however I am looking forward to the 2007 Dundies

  34. I loved that awkward moment right after the office clip aired right after pam said something and it cut to Rainn and Steve and they both had blank looks.

  35. You’re all winners in my heart! lol
The show would have been a total bore if it hadn’t been for you all!
On the plus, you don’t really have to associated with one of the worst emmy nights ever. I mean Ryan Seacrest (sp?) and a theatre in the round? Whoever planned this should be fired. Hopefully next year they’ll have Conan back and a stage that doesn’t force half the audience to stare at peoples backs the entire night!
Much Love! You’re all amazing! xo

  36. To Rainn, Jenna, John, and expecially Steve: Your contributions to the Emmy show were the best! The rest of the show was simply awful!! Steve accepting the Emmy was the highlight of the night!! The Dundees rule, anyway!!

  37. Watching the Emmy’s again (Tivo), it’s good to see how much the audience appreciated Jenna Fischer and Rainn Wilson since both of them got the loudest & the longest applause during their respective nominee announcements.

Also it was good to see Kanye West do a skit with Rainn, since he’s mentioned more than once that his favorite show is The Office.

Sad that Jenna didn’t get it but I’m glad that she at least got nominated. John Kransinski DESERVED an Emmy nomination last year for his Season 2 role but was snubbed. And regarding her dress, she mentioned to Kristin on E! it was more a dress of convenience since she still has some uneasiness with her injured back.

Lastly it’s sort of funny how 30 Rock won Best Comedy, yet it was The Office that beat out 30 Rock for Best Comedy Writing and Best Comedy Editing… hmmm… But you gotta give credit to Tina Fey though, she is a very good writer (just please town down the Tracy Jordan character).

  38. I could not agree more Tanster. Rainn was hilarious with Kanye West, Steve taking the award for Ricky was awesome, I wonder if it was improvised. I’m dissapointed that Jenna, Rainn, Steve, and the show did not win but it dosn’t matter because to us Dunderheads, they are the real winners.

  39. The Office, even without the Emmy, is the BEST show on TV!! And “thank you” to the cast and crew for entertaining us every Thursday night…you are all amazingly talented.

Also, a big “thanks” to Steve, Rainn, Jenna and John for giving us the best and funniest moments during an otherwise boring and disappointing Emmy Show.

  40. I think they should start a new category at the Emmy’s – Best Show in the Entire Universe. The Office would win that hands down for years in a row… consecutively. lol.

  41. I was very upset last night, and didn’t even want to post after the Emmys, but, I think that “The Office” is the classiest, funniest show on television, period. Emmy or no Emmy. And Rainn singing with Kayne West made up for the losses.

    Two weeks!

  42. You all won in my heart. You all looked all glammed out last night. I’m just happy that The Office was recognized for their great achievements.

  43. I just have to say I’m looking forward to 30 episodes of Office goodness in season 4 and I’m really grateful this wonderful show was given a chance to find its audience. That is pretty rare on network tv. Let’s be thankful NBC didn’t pull the plug–it’s the little show that could!

    Office sweep in 2008!!!

  44. I just had to comment again….

I really hope that someone has alerted the cast and crew to come here and read all these notes…. i have to agree with the earlier comment about how this show has created such a great community of people. When a show can bring people together like this who needs an award? I mean other than a Dundie… which is far more valuable than an Emmy. :)

  45. I have to agree with ChillisBannedMe. A Dundie is soooo much better then an Emmy!!!
    Dundie! Dundie!! Dundie!!!

  46. I’m just glad an NBC show won best comedy, and not Ugly Betty. The Office will get it next year!!!!! I don’t think My Name is Earl will last much longer, so Jenna could get it next year as well.

  47. The Office basically ruled the Emmy’s. Obviously they think that the show does something right, Steve and Rainn were the main attractions. I was so upset that Jenna didn’t win, she really deserved it..being likeable, realistic and funny is a hard thing to pull off. For Greg Daniels to win for writing is a big deal though, so congrats to him! For 30 Rock to win is the best alternative to The Office in my opinion, and Ricky Gervais’ win is also who my “second best” would have been. It’s sad that Steve didn’t win, but the Daily Show reunion with Stephen and John was priceless!

  48. As much as I’m still angry about NBC not being on iTunes anymore, I still have to respect how NBC sticks with their shows they have faith in. Very respectable.

The Office has started to pull away from the BBC version, and it’s getting more respect. Now that Jam is together, there can be nothing but an Office sweep next year.

But, I’m sorry Rainn, I can understand why Jeremy got it over you, but, yes, you are still amazing too.

But, Jenna got robbed: No Question.

  49. Even though they didn’t win they were all amazing, even though none of them said anything besides Rainn and Steve. I really hope Jenna gets nominated again next year and same with John.

  50. On every entertainment site I’ve visited today, the Office cast’s antics (along with Jon’s and Stephen’s) are mentioned as the only highlights of the night. Winners either aren’t mentioned, or just are as an afterthought. I think that says it all!

  51. well put tanster!
i like to think of it this way:
the office has MANY emmy seasons ahead of it.
this just means the peak is still to come :)

  52. The cast and crew of The Office are winners because they have such a great show to work on and we just benefit from that. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve converted into fans by quoting Michael and Dwight. The writing is just so REAL!!

  53. Even though I’m quite disappointed with the lack of Office Emmy wins, I gotta say, having fans willing to parade around all day proudly wearing an Office t-shirt as her friends all ridicule her mercilessly has gotta count for something.
*Does the Running Man dance in said Office t-shirt*

  54. Like everyone I couldn’t agree more with the sentiment of this message. As I watch that infamous final clip from the Job, I can’t help but remember back to when that episode first premiered and what an effect it had on me. I was sitting around with my boyfriend’s family watching in anticipation. I remember when the door opened and it was Jim, my eyes immediately welled up with tears and from that point on I just lost it. I was crying and yelling and just plain freaking out, and I don’t know if I’ve ever cried at a tv moment like that before. It has such a profound impact, it’s awesome!

  55. As a West Coasters, I sat in TOC while the East Coasters did a play by play. We were all so disappointed for you all, with the exception of one win. :-) Keep your heads up. There is always next year. Congrats on the nomination!!!

  56. The Office is always number one in the hearts of flans (sounds a tad like a salada.) Congratulations to Greg and the writing team and the fabulous editors.

  57. On Emmy night, my dedication to The Office only solidified. Being lucky enough to be in the stands during the Red Carpet entrances, I got the attention of both Angela and Phyllis, who smiled and waved at me. Afterwards at the ET/People entrance, both Kate and Melora came over to where I was standing (beyond the security partition) to shake my hand and talk about their evenings. Craig said hello to my group as he was driving by to enter and waved at all of us and fleeced it out before going into the theatre. I got a chance to congratulate Rainn on his nomination who then reminded me that he didn’t win. Still. Best. Night. Ever.

I converted many to The Office when they realized that the stars weren’t too good to talk to their fans.
