Hamilton College talks to Paul Lieberstein

Paul Lieberstein’s alma mater, Hamilton College, interviews him about his various roles on The Office:

Best Part of Your Job: When we are in pre-production, this is the best job in the world. Working 10 to 7, sitting around and brainstorming with the other writers, making things funnier and writing and rewriting scenes — that’s as fun as it gets.

  1. I sometimes think I’m one of the few people that like Toby and don’t think he’s weird. He’s just sad.

  2. You are not alone. Toby is by far my favorite character and at the beginning of any scene between him and Michael I instantly crack up before a word is said. Paul is perfect for the role and I’m glad things worked out where he could act and write.

  3. I like Toby too. It seems like it’s just Paul being himself, Toby’s so low key. And the fact that there’s no known reason for the animosity Michael shows him makes him so likable for some reason. He’s the underdog to root for. I really wish he would’ve gotten the courage to ask Pam out this year.

  4. Toby is my absolute favorite character, and I consider myself a huge fan of Paul Lieberstein. How cute is he?! Wow. :o)

  5. Hmmm, I’m curious about the screenplay he’s “tinkering” with… and Yes, Toby’s one of my favorites on the show (I like the “He talked the whole time” comment he made in Sexual Harassment when Jan asked Michael if he saw the video… perfect delivery)

  6. Does anyone get the sense that Paul REALLY doesn’t like acting on the show? He’s mentioned several times that he does not like Toby.

  7. I just love Paul – he plays Toby perfectly. Toby is so pathetic it’s hard NOT to love him!!

  8. My favorite Toby-Michael exchange:

Michael: Why are you here? I didn’t even invite you to my birthday party.

    Toby: I work here.

    Michael (mocking): I work here.

  9. I think Paul is just very modest and maybe doesn’t know what a talented actor he is. His understated performances always have me laughing hysterically! I’ve taken it upon myself to re-name his character “Poor Toby,” because that’s what I’m always saying – “Poor, poor Toby”! Plus he’s just cute as a button!

  10. Haha–George Frankly from Mathnet!!! I enjoyed reading his interview almost as much as Toby’s.

  11. Paul’s a pretty darn good actor. He might have accidentally run into something. It is pretty hard to play someone like Toby, and get emotions across with limited facial expressions. He does a very good job.
