From Variety:

Columbia Pictures is getting serious about scaring up a new installment of its blockbuster “Ghostbusters” franchise.

The studio has set “The Office” co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

  1. Speechless. My childhood is coming back by people behind my favorite television show.

    I can hardly contain myself.

  2. That would freakin’ rock, but I think all the original cast would have to sign back on for it to be worth it.

  3. Great news! I loved this movie when I was a kid and it actually has staying power — I totally enjoyed watching it again with my young niece a few months back. Those two have the right combination of imagination and hilarious writing to make the sequel so much fun.

  4. I was already excited at the prospect (is that the word?) of a new Ghostbusters but having Gene & Lee write it just made my excitement meter go up 30 levels.

  5. Wow, seems like no rest for Gene and Lee as of late. I’m starting to forget what upcoming project they’ve got going I should be most excited for…

And I second DJ. If Ramis and Murray can’t work it out, don’t even bother with the movie. It wouldn’t be the same without either of them.

  6. I’m so excited for them!!
Writing the Ghostbusters sequel will be huge exposure, good for them!

  7. Oh man that’s so exciting for them! (And for us!) I hope this deal goes down. Their writing will be perfect for a Ghostbusters sequel.

  8. As a member of gbfans.com and a dedicated Ghostbusters fan, this will never happen. It’s been discussed since the late 90’s and us die hard GB fans know it won’t be made. If it is, awesome, but don’t get your hopes up.

  9. Question: Who you gonna call?

    Fact: Ghostbusters. … Also, Bono.

    [from tanster: lol!]

  10. This will not happen. GBIII has languished in development for years. Aykroyd had a script. It went nowhere.

Bill Murray and Harold Ramis had a falling out years ago. Another reason this won’t happen.

Plus, GBII wasn’t that good, imho.

  11. What all of you don’t realize, not being video game nerds, is that a Ghostbusters video game with a serious script written by Akroyd and Ramis is completed and will be available by March of next year. This is particularly notable because all of the original cast got together to record extensive voice work, and they realized they enjoyed working on the franchise and had a very smooth time. I was surprised when I saw this, but I am also optimistic and also fairly sure that getting together to do the voice work to the game brought out their desire to do this movie.

  12. To those saying it won’t happen, I do disagree.

This could very well happen since a month or two ago information was leaked that Steve Carell and Seth Rogen were tapped to play a new generation of Ghostbusters and that the original cast will pass the proton packs to a new generation.

I don’t like that idea because I think it is too cheesy, but I have faith that Gene and Lee will do a great job. And troy is right regarding the videogame as well.

  13. As a girl who played Ghostbusters with the boys at recess in kindergarden, I think it sounds pretty cool!

  14. Ghostbusters 2 came out in 1989. Not that great of a sequel.

I loved the original Ghostbusters, of course I was only 10 or so when it came out. However, I do adore Murray & Ramis AND Lee & Gene, so it will be interesting to see what happens…if it does happen.

  15. I thought that the Ghostbusters game was supposed to be the only continuation of the story…

If you don’t know anything about the game, look here: Link

I guess the script that has been written for the game was actually meant for another movie, but I think they just never had the time to make it. Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis are writing the game’s script (they wrote the original movie scripts).

  16. To Nate, 26: Truth.

This could either be really fun or kind of lame. Here’s hoping to really fun. Ghostbusters is great.

  17. YEAH!!! LOVE Ghostbusters!!! Wonder if they will have any Office members join the film. I’m sure Rainn would fit in nicely.
