Aug. 29: NBC Universal Village

Synopsis for ‘Weight Loss’ (Sept. 25):

For the first time, we see what happens over eight weeks of the summer, as a Dunder Mifflin weight loss initiative causes the branch to diet and become obsessed with their weight. Michael (Steve Carell) pursues a friendship with his new HR rep, Holly (Oscar nominee, Amy Ryan). Jim (John Krasinski) misses Pam (Jenna Fischer) who attends art school in New York. Dwight (Rainn Wilson), Andy (Ed Helms) and Angela (Angela Kinsey) attend to unfinished business. B.J. Novak, Kate Flannery, Mindy Kaling, Oscar Nunez, Brian Baumgartner, Leslie David Baker, Phyllis Smith, Creed Bratton and Craig Robinson also star.

Aug. 28: Hollywood.com

“Jan is pregnant, so you’ll see her pregnancy a little bit and ultimately get to see what she’s like as a mother,” Hardin explains. “At the moment, [Michael] isn’t involved in any way, but he wants to be the surrogate dad, for sure, and he’s going to try his best to be involved in the kid’s life. And she’s going to let him do that. Then there’s also some wonderful tension between Jan and the new HR women (played by Amy Ryan).”

Aug. 27: DailyBulletin.com

Before reaching Fontana, [Dale Earnhardt Jr.] will be at Universal Studios today to watch cast members tape a scene for his favorite sitcom, “The Office.” The scene will involve actors Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski.

Aug. 26: Ausiello Files

Question: Is the mystery character returning to Dunder Mifflin someone who had been previously fired? Perhaps a certain pregnant woman looking for a job? — Liz

Ausiello: Perhaps. Perhaps not. (Translation: You’re getting warmer.)

Aug. 26: Watch With Kristin

Kristin Dos Santos talks to Jenna Fischer:

I am away at art school right now. Pam was accepted to Pratt, and she’s living in New York, and there is a whole new world opening up for her. We’ve been shooting some really great scenes at USC with Rich Sommer and John Cabrera and having so much fun.

I think last season was all about Pam being in love and just enjoying that and being content with Jim and now, she still has Jim, but she is growing and getting into something she’s always wanted to do. It’s a big year for Pam.

Is there a chance Pam might not go back to Dunder Mifflin?
We were just talking about that the other day, actually, and that hasn’t been decided yet. It’s a three-month program at the school, and I can tell you that she’s really loving living in New York. I think at this point, Pam has been the receptionist for about eight and half years, so this change is all very liberating for her.

And she’s living at the school, right?
Yes.

Jim and Pam definitely have a lot of phone time.

When you look down at your left hand, what do you see?
Right now, I see nothing. I don’t see a ring. I see that I have a hangnail, and that’s about it—I’m hoping for a spa certificate from Rainn.

Where do Jim and Pam stand right now?
Well, Jim didn’t pop the question. And Pam has gone off to art school. So they are not together in the same place right now. But this is not Jim and Pam being separated like they were when Jim went to the Stamford branch. This is Jim and Pam living in different places but still being together and very much connected.

This is going to be a big year for Pam, and I think you’re going to like it. There’s a lot happening. You just wait.

Aug. 25: Watch With Kristin

Madison in Tallahassee, Fla.: Kristin, I am craving some Office dish, big time. Any news?

John Krasinski told me he’s talked to his costars about possibly directing an upcoming episode. “I talked to Rainn, Jenna and Steve about it, and they said it would be cool, but I think they’re just being nice. We’ll see.” As you may know, John’s been working on a movie called Interviews With Hideous Men, which he’s written, directed and starred in, but said directing his own show would be different: “It might be a little weird. It would be like if you’re at dinner with your family and telling them when they can eat. And you’re like, ‘Mom, not yet, you don’t pass the salt yet! I’ll tell you when to do that!’ ”

Bitty in Orange, Calif.: Got any Office info?

I’m hearing that Pam will be replaced early on in the season while she’s at art school. And who it is, I think you will like! Also, Brian Baumgartner says Kevin’s crush on Amy Ryan’s character, Holly, is just heating up: “No one is more excited than Kevin that Holly is in the office. No one.” Hear that, Michael?

Matt in Valencia, Calif.: Any more Office news?

They’re looking to cast a 6-foot-1-inch male middle manager. I find myself thinking that John Krasinski is pretty tall and also wondering if there might be a connection. Plus, I’m hearing of Save the Dates going out! Who’s are they? Hmm … It could actually be one of three couples

Aug. 18: Watch With Kristin

Andrea in Portland, Ore.: You went to The Office set? What did you see?

I was there for the third half-hour of the year. (The premiere’s an hour-long installment airing Sept. 25 at 9 p.m., so this one will air the second week.) It’s an ep called “Business Ethics.” Basically, when Amy Ryan’s character, Holly, puts together a meeting on, well, business ethics, she soon realizes the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin hasn’t exactly been operating along these lines. (Ya think?) More to come later …

Ausiello Files (Ew’s print edition Aug 22/29 pg 110)

Q: Office news. You have it. I want it. Give it up! — Pamela

A: Given all the tomfoolery that transpires at Dunder Mifflin, it’s kind of shocking to think that we’ve yet to meet this guy, but this season The Office will finally be introducing the head of HR. However, since he’ll be heard before he’s actually seen in Scranton, there’s still time for Michael to remove that hidden camera in the ladies’ room.

Tipster: Quin

Aug. 15: Watch with Kristin

I personally was on the set of The Office all day yesterday, where they were shooting a business ethics scene all day long, lead by the lovely Holly Flax (Amy Ryan). And I can tell you that the only series regular not in attendance was one Miss Jenna Fischer.

This, I believe, describes the second episode of Season 5.

Aug. 14: Dunder Mifflin Summer Memo

Dunder Mifflin is very excited to present the Summer Weight Loss Initiative!

Each branch will be competing to lose the most weight over the course of the next seven weeks. Office weigh-ins will be conducted every week and reported to corporate by your Human Resource Representative. At the end of the seven weeks, the branch that loses the most weight WILL WIN THREE EXTRA VACATION DAYS!

According to my sources, the memo’s disclaimer section is significant …

Aug. 14: John Cabrera’s Twitter page

John Cabrera, who directed Jenna Fischer in Wisely’s music video Through Any Window, posted these Twitters today:

Just had a career first. Auditioned 4 The Office @ 6 today, was cast @ 9, and I work @ noon tomorrow.

I just got to set and freaked the hell out of Jenna. She had no idea I had been cast on the show.

Tipster: Tiffany

Aug. 14: Zap2it KorbiTV

Have you heard anything Office-related lately? I’m dying for Dunder-Mifflin gossip, especially romance story type stuff — Krissy
What I’m hearing is that the season premiere will feature two love triangles: Dwight-Angela-Andy and Jan-Michael-Holly (Amy Ryan, the new HR lady) …

Tipster: Eric

Aug. 12: Ask Ausiello

Question: Regarding your latest episode of Ausiello TV, I think the returning Office character is going to be Roy. — Jeff
Ausiello: I think you’re wrong. And just so everyone’s clear, the character is returning to Dunder Mifflin. It’s an important distinction. Make note of it.

Question: Please, please, please give us some scoop on The Office. — Claire
Ausiello: I’m thinking Toby should have studied this video before leaving for Costa Rica last May.

Aug. 12: Jenna Fischer in Marie Claire

“Last year [Jim and Pam's] relationship was smooth sailing,” she says. “This season they’ll have to deal with a long-distance relationship.”

Aug. 11: Watch With Kristin

Casey in San Diego: What I want to know about is the guy who’s really destined to be with Pam: Toby!
I do love me some Toby (though do not want him with Pam, sorry), and therefore I am very saddened to report that he may have fallen on hard times. Sources told me exclusively that USC wasn’t only home to the prestigious Pratt Art School, but also a Costa Rican hospital. ¡Carumba! I seem to remember someone leaving for that very country at the end of the last season named Toby, so I’m hoping he’s OK.

Rick in Orange, Calif.: Kristin, you said you were going to share what Rich Sommer was doing on The Office. What’s the scoop?
Looks like Mad Men’s Rich Sommer is going to be playing one of Pam’s classmates, and sources told me they were giggling together during a scene. I suspect they’ll have just enough of a flirtation to make Jim a little insecure about Shiny New Beesley.

Aug. 11: Ausiello Files

Q: I’m dying for anything you have on The Office. — Meghan
A: Here’s a life preserver, then: Although Mad Men’s Rich Sommer tells me he’s been ‘’sworn to secrecy” about his guest turn in the comedy’s Sept. 25 season premiere, he does admit that he’s playing a ”very different character” from his regular role as Harry Crane. Savvy EW.com readers are speculating that he’ll turn out to be Jan’s sperm donor, but my Dunder Mifflin mole believes he’ll actually have a connection to Pam instead.

Tipster: Niki

Aug. 8: Entertainment Weekly

As predicted, it looks like The Office will get the prime real estate following the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. The comedy’s executive producers told EW.com exclusively that they expect to produce the hour-long episode for the timeslot now that the Office spinoff is off the table.

Aug. 8: The Ausiello Files

A Dunder Mifflin employee who you think is gone for good will be returning on the season premiere. You think you know who it is, but you don’t.

Aug. 7: Watch with Kristin

Sources tell me that as you read this, the University of Southern California is masquerading as Pratt Art School!

According to sources, the Office crew has been shooting scenes at “Pratt” this week, and here are a few not-too-spoilery (promise) details…

  • Pam will be studying under at least two different art professors—one is a bearded dude and the other is a lady hipster
  • Pam gets lost and sits in on the wrong class, but eventually she finds her way …

Aug. 5: EW’S Ask Ausiello

Question: I am dying, dying, for anything you have on The Office. Please tell me you have something! — Meghan
Ausiello: I have something! Thanks to Monday’s Aus Files scoop, you already know that Mad Men’s Rich Sommer is guest starring in the Sept. 25 season premiere. Well, what you don’t know is that if it weren’t for the writers strike, it probably never would have happened! Sommer says the idea for his Office visit first came up when he met producer/star Mindy Kaling last winter on the picket line. “Mindy is a big fan of Mad Men and she knew that I was a big fan of The Office,” he explains, “so we mused about finding some way to get me over there.” Sommer insists he’s been “sworn to secrecy” about the specifics of his guest stint, although he does admit that he’s playing a “very different character” from Harry Crane, the 1960s ad exec he portrays on Mad Men. “When you see it,” he adds, “you’ll understand why I can’t say anything.” And when you pick up this week’s issue of EW and turn to page 54, you’ll understand why I had to.

Question: The Office returns in seven weeks. Surely, that deserves a scoop. — Mark
Ausiello: Based on what I’m hearing about the premiere, it’s either going to go down as the funniest Office episode ever or NBC’s most blatant piece of cross-promotion yet. Or some combination of both.

Aug. 4: Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello

Exclusive: ‘Mad Men’ Star Poached by ‘The Office’

Rich Sommer is going from a work environment rife with sexual harassment, gender bias, racial discrimination and lewd conduct, to a work environment rife with, well, sexual harassment, gender bias, racial discrimination and lewd conduct. The only difference now? It’s 2008, not 1962.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Sommer, who plays Mad Men’s bespectacled and bow-tied ad exec Harry Crane, has put in for a (temporary) transfer to the Scranton branch of Dunder-Mifflin. In other words, he’s guest starring in an episode of The Office.

Details about Sommer’s role are being closely guarded — an Office insider would only reveal that his character “ties in with a surprise twist” — but this much I can tell you: He’ll turn up in the comedy’s Sept. 25 season premiere.

July 31: OfficeTally interviews The Office writers at Comic-Con

Re: Holiday episodes:

tanster: Will you be doing any holiday episodes? A lot of fans miss Christmas, and Halloween …

Greg: We missed it, too. We had such a good Christmas one written, and there is a Halloween episode, or there will be Halloween during an episode, it won’t all be about Halloween, coming up.

tanster: For Season 5?

Greg: Yes. (To other writers) What are we doing for Christmas this year? (To Justin) You wrote it, right? (To me) Hang on a second … (Walks over to Justin, and they start whispering out of earshot … gah!)

tanster (to Lee): Darn!

Greg: Okay, yeah. It’s the Christmas episode.

Re: Season 5:

tanster: I was wondering what, if anything, can you tell me about Season 5? We know that the season premiere is an hour long …

Jen: It is an hour long.

tanster: Can you tell me who the writer is?

Jen: Gene [Stupnitsky] and Lee [Eisenberg] wrote it. The Emmy-nominated Gene and Lee now, from ‘Dinner Party.’ And actually, for the first time ever, we’re going to see what happens over the summer.

You know how we usually jump forward in terms of the documentary and we skip a gap? We’re going to see the summer. Every act is a different week. So the first episode will be eight weeks long. It’s week 1 of the summer, week 2 of the summer, week 3, week 4, week 5, week 6, week 7, week 8.

And it’s weight loss. It’s a group weight loss competition. They’re competing against other branches in a weight loss challenge. And we’re going to check in with them.

tanster: Is this episode called “Weight Loss”?

Jen: It’s between being called “Weight Loss” and “Summer.” My guess is it’s going to be called “Weight Loss.”

tanster: Will Holly be in the premiere?

Jen: Yup. Holly’s coming back. She’ll definitely be in the premiere. And Jan will have a baby at some point.

Jen: We’re going to have a baby shower. There’s going to be a baby shower for Jan’s baby. Michael makes the office throw a baby shower for this baby that is not even his.

July 17: ECWeekend.com

From an interview with Mindy Kaling:

Can you give us any hints on what we might expect for the upcoming season?

I would, but I’d probably be fired. (Laughs). There’s going to be — and I like many Americans, when I saw Jim almost propose to Pam at the end of the finale, I was so upset. My own mother was like, “I cannot believe that you guys pulled the rug out from under us like that.” So people who are annoyed about that or just want to see some resolution with that or some movement with that are going to be very happy. You don’t have to wait too long to find out. And Amy Ryan will be back, who’s amazing, so it’s going to be such a good season, I think.

Are you guys excited to hopefully have the opportunity to do a full season?

Yes. Excited and scared because we have 28 episodes, which I think is a record. I don’t know if any other NBC show has done so many episodes, so I’m really excited about that.

July 6: Watch With Kristin

When asked about the prevalence of the Toby and Ryan characters in season five, Mindy said, “I think that we’ll be satisfied with how much we see Toby and Ryan. Toby disappeared in the finale of last season, and Ryan was seemingly arrested, so tying up those stories will be interesting. We haven’t seen the last of Toby is what I can tell fans.”

June 29: Variety

“The Wire” star Amy Ryan will get a chance to flex her comedic muscles a bit more next season as she joins “The Office” for multiple episodes.

Ryan is set to appear in at least five segs in the fall, reprising her role as human resources rep Holly Flax. Ryan’s character first showed up in “The Office’s” season finale as a potential love interest for Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

June 18: Winnipeg Sun

Steve Carell has signed on to play The Office’s Michael Scott for at least three more seasons.

This was mentioned by the Winnipeg Sun last week:

Steve Carell, who portrays the inept regional manager on NBC’s hugely popular The Office, says he’ll be with the Emmy-winning comedy for at least another three seasons despite his burgeoning big-screen career.

“All of the main cast are signed for three more. Beyond that, I have no idea.”

Ricky Gervais confirmed the news in his ‘This Side of Truth’ blog yesterday:

Had some great news today about the American version of The Office.

Steve Carell (now one of the most bankable film stars in the world) has just signed up for another three years with us.

Tipsters: Tobyfan, Christina

May 23: NBC Universal Media Village

‘The Office’ Season 5 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25, 9pm ET, with a one-hour episode.

May 22: The Daily of the University of Washington

After Ryan’s departure in last Thursday’s season finale, for the next season, will your character be returning to the show, or will you be back only as a writer/producer?

BJN: You will definitely see Ryan next year on The Office.

May 19: Watch with Kristin

Is Amy going to be back for more episodes next season?

It was love at first Yoda impersonation! For me, anyway. Plus, Holly and “Special K” Kevin were freaking priceless! I checked on this for you, and the official word from the NBC rep and Amy’s rep is that nothing’s been decided for sure about her status next season…Still, an inside source who works on the show tells me, “Oh yeah, we have to see her again next season. She’ll be there for sure.”

Any word on The Office spinoff?

I still can’t shake this feeling that it could be Jim and Pam in the big city … Bonkers, right? But she’s going to art school, and if Ryan does happen to return and hear that message Jim left, he could be packing up his desk. Argh! But I’m sure that’s a ludicrous idea, ’cause the OG Office needs them. I also know the initial plan was to bring in a new person (i.e. Rashida Jones) to Dunder Mifflin Scranton and then spin off that person, but because of the strike it didn’t pan out. I’m also told by a source, “The rumors that it’s definitely Dwight or it’s definitely Andy are false. But it is someone who will be taking a big risk.” (Duh on that second part. Though I do trust Greg Daniels and Mike Schur, the producers of the spinoff, fully.)

May 1: WJKH interviews Leslie David Baker

According to Leslie David Baker, Season 5 starts shooting July 28th.

Apr. 2: Variety

NBC will use the post-Super Bowl berth on Feb. 1 to air a special episode of “The Office,” followed by the “Office” spinoff … Peacock will once again air hourlong “Office” episodes in September.

Mar. 10: Watch with Kristin

Sarah in Portland, Oregon: Is it true we’re getting 30 half-hours of The Office next season?

I’m hearing that NBC actually requested 32 half-hours, but producers think that’s just beyond the pale, so it could settle out at 30 after all.

Mar. 9: Steve Carell

While the possibility of a SAG strike will not affect Season 4 (Season 4 finishes shooting in April; the current SAG contract expires in June), it may curtail Season 5.

Here is a brief quote from Steve Carell on that:

Mar. 4: Ausiello Report

My Office spies tell me that the Peacock has ordered 30 episodes for next season [Season 5].

Feb. 25: Watch With Kristin: X-Files and Office Dish from WonderCon

During the panel for Get Smart, Carell told the audience that the Office cast goes back to work in two weeks. And although he won’t be penning any episodes for this season, he is planning to write an episode for next season based on his recent two-week jury-duty stint, where he served on a case in which neither of the parties spoke English and required a translator.

  1. 1651. beer me, Milwaukee

Good episode..definitely not my favorite finale, it should have been supersized..or an hour. And where was my girl Kelly at??! Thought we might see some Kelly/Andy love as a surprise or something crazy like that!

Erin saying BOOYAH got andy a little blood rush, don’t ya think?! HA!

Jenna and John (and Steve of course!) are such phenomenal actors…totally deserving of every award! I mean, the whole show should be nominated & winning for everything!!

  2. 1650. gatinha

JAMbino is an awesome name! Love it!

  3. 1649. AndIHaveWorms

Oh yeah, and I think Jambino should be the baby’s nickname!

  4. 1648. AndIHaveWorms

Several of us were talking in the chatroom about tonight’s episode, and we all think it would be a great idea to have a predictions page for season six! What do ya say, Tanster? Predictions on whether the Jam baby will be a boy or girl… etc. :-)

I think it would be a hit! Pretty please? ;-)

  5. 1647. Only Eight Nards

    Totally called Brian Stack!

  6. 1646. pk

omg!!! did you guys see what just happened???

  7. 1645. jp halpsly

Could the pregnancy and the ‘twist with repercussions well into next season’ be that Michael and Holly go off together during the picnic and make a baby?

  8. 1644. Olivia

I am going to guess that the relationship that does not progress is Jim and Pam’s.

Don’t get me wrong – I love them together. I just thing that all of the spoilers that have been released – the pregnancy spoiler and then Pam going to the hospital and all of the stuff about the wedding – are meant to make us think that they are going to get married or Pam’s going to be pregnant (or both). I think they are trying to lead us off the trail.

My guess is the pregnant one is Holly. I think that’s why she and her boyfriend are shopping for a house.

  9. 1643. rockin'robin

OMG you guys, watch this promo!!

    Link

Maybe the big twist is that the scranton branch shuts down and moves somewhere else. I dunno, but that’s what I got outta that promo, all the scranton workers seem super hypo + Jim and Dwight are getting in the same car!! What do ya think?

  10. 1642. Guy Incognito

I would think that Todd Packer is the not-seen-since-Season-2 character coming back; for good reason as he presumably still works for Dunder Mifflin in some capacity.

If Pam is indeed the character that is pregnant I’m going to be pretty disappointed as that’s not what her character needs attm after her recent career change. Angela would be a whole lot funnier to see. Obviously it would be Dwight’s baby as she and Andy never got “there.”

  11. 1641. jp halpsly

1647. Garbage: Do all of your predictions involve Katy having Jim’s kid? This is like the third time you’ve predicted that.

  12. 1640. NotaBadDay

Tanster, didn’t you tell us that you saw every scene filmed in the finale except ONE? Do you know what happened during that scene? Just askin. Not that I can pry it out of you. Cookie, Tanster. Cookie… :-)

  13. 1639. jif08

person we haven’t seen since season 2

    stacy.
(poor kevin…how’s he gonna handle lynn AND stacy)

  14. 1638. SSE

Just because one relationship doesn’t progress, it doesn’t mean it will regress, either, right? Surely you can tell us that much, Tanster??? I’m getting sooooo anxious!

  15. 1637. tanster

I am just about ready to explode, holding all this information in. :)

  16. 1636. Garbage

Maybe Jim and Pam will have a huge fight and break up. How awesome would that be? Ooh what if Katy comes back and has a kid that turns out to be Jim’s and he has to pay child support now? Now that would be a great twist.

  17. 1635. Sharon J

I think the surprise is that when Pam is rushed to the hospital for her ankle, they find out she’s pregnant when they run a blood test or something.

  18. 1634. Lightning Swing

@ 1642: Karen was pregnant in the episode, “Lecture Circuit”, so there’s a possibility that she could be on maternity leave. I can’t wait for tonight’s season finale and to see what the big twist is at the end!

  19. 1633. Scrantonicity 3

I’m upset it’s only a half hour episode!

  20. 1632. jp halpsly

I’m guessing that the relationship that does not progress will be JAM’s. Not to say that they’ll regress or have some sort of negativity, they’re just in a stable place right now.
