The Horseshoe Falls took a back seat Thursday morning when tourists on the Maid of the Mist discovered they had walked onto the set of the NBC comedy “The Office.”
Actor John Krasinski and actress Jenna Fischer stood at the front of the famous boat attraction as they filmed a scene for an upcoming episode set in Niagara Falls, where their characters — Pam Beesly and Jim Halpert — finally tie the knot.
The cast and crew and about two dozen extras took two 30-minute rides through the swirling waters below the falls as they shot and reshot what could become a crucial scene in the show’s fourth episode this season.
… Fischer did wear a white empire-waist wedding gown with beaded trim, and Krasinski wore a black tuxedo with a boutonniere of two white flowers during their Maid of the Mist ride.
The pair also wore blue Maid of the Mist slickers, but took them off as they neared the falls. Heavy mist soaked their clothes and left them dripping wet throughout several takes as the boat rocked in the water.
“None of us expected this whatsoever. The actors were completely drenched,” said Randy Cordray, producer. “It was like standing in your backyard and having someone spray a hose right in your face, but John and Jenna played their scene beautifully, and the troupers that they are, they powered through it.”
Cordray said staff from the show twice scouted the location by taking Maid of the Mist rides three weeks ago and again on Wednesday, but did not encounter the amount of water that sprayed over the actors Thursday morning.
“Once the actors got wet, there’s nothing you can do about it,” Cordray said. “So we just stayed wet, and we took another boat ride, and we went around again, and we played it wet for the second go-round.”
Cordray also played a boat captain in the episode.
Filming the show aboard the boat was a challenge for the cast and crew, which typically shoots on a studio set in Los Angeles. That meant abandoning the high-definition cameras the crew typically uses and instead using a 16mm camera with a spinning device that keeps water droplets off the lens.
Fischer’s hair and makeup also were factors under the falls.
“We had to think of waterproof mascara, anything that wasn’t going to run, while still keeping them fresh-faced,” said Laverne Caracuzzi-Milazzo, head makeup artist for “The Office.” “Obviously due to this particular episode, we still needed to keep them looking good at all times.”
Fischer and Krasinski also shot a scene outside the Red Coach Inn — renamed the Statler Falls Hotel for the episode — in which Fischer carries her wedding dress into the hotel as Krasinski talks to the camera in the show’s mockumentary style.
Cordray said most of the episode was shot at inside locations in Los Angeles, including a restaurant and a chapel.
Fischer wore white boots with her wedding gown, and Krasinski’s black tie was cut in half. There was also a long kiss between the two on the boat.
“… we’re very secretive about the nature of our story lines,” Cordray said. “All I can really say is that the wedding does happen in Niagara Falls, and Jim and Pam decide that they would really like to get closer to the waterfall, and so to do that, they take a ride on the Maid of the Mist.”
The shooting — which the crew tried to keep secret until Thursday by dubbing it the “Chandler project” — drew a small crowd of in-the-know spectators who bought tickets for the Maid of the Mist ride.
August 27: Niagara Gazette
A big ol’ spoilery article about the shooting of Jim and Pam’s wedding at Niagara Falls!
There was debate over where to tie the knot. It was a toss up between the Maid of the Mist or Terrapin Point. Ultimately the boat won …
Tourist and locals who happened upon the shooting that took place at two sites in the city were able to get a close-up look at the couple as they wed on the boat and then booked into their hotel, a fictional location called the “Statler Falls Hotel,” at the Red Coach Inn on Buffalo Avenue. The inn was also decorated with a kitschy new sign that read: “Prepare to Falls in Love.”
Thursday morning the actors John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer were “married” during filming that occurred during two rides on the Maid of the Mist, with actual tourists relegated to the top deck while filming went on with extras on the lower deck. The tourists were asked to refrain from taking photos or video until the filming was completed and then they were given a photo opportunity …
Check out the two photos, too! (They’re on the right of the article.)

Re: this last week’s wedding shoot:
I don’t think that fans will be disappointed. It’s one of the funniest, most Officey episodes that will ever air. I actually cried during taping as I am so emotionally invested in these characters. And of course, I laughed … a lot!

When the Emmy-winning NBC comedy returns for a sixth season Sept. 17, the series will pick up a few months after the May season finale in which Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim (John Krasinski) discovered Pam is pregnant.
“We pick up three weeks before the wedding,” executive producer and writer Paul Lieberstein said in an interview from the show’s set in Los Angeles earlier this month.
The wedding will take place in the fourth episode of the season; viewers will meet Jim’s and Pam’s families. Pam will give birth in a February episode.
“They’re obviously a good couple, but just to throw a little real, but very simple obstacles, in front of them. They’re the kind of people who deal with small things in an amusing way. Jim has a good sense of humor and Pam can get worked up by certain things. So we thought it was an interesting way to go.”
“Jim’s cool and he’s fun, but he’s a goof-off, not a super-hard worker and not very ambitious,” Lieberstein said. “He’s been very adolescent. He’s going to try to step up. We feel like Jim is a big part of what we’re focusing on this year, actually.”
When Pam and Jim depart for their honeymoon, Lieberstein said, “The coalition of reason is a little weak in the office.”
So when Michael (Steve Carell) has a meeting with an Italian man, everyone becomes convinced the Mafia is extorting him for money.
In addition to the major life changes heading Jim and Pam’s way, Lieberstein said that Michael also will have a big story line.
“Michael finally kind of found his mojo in a way last season,” he said. “We’ve always said Michael is great at sales for reasons we can’t explain and terrible at managing. And that is something we see becoming a big deal in an arc you see starting the second episode.”
Also look for Andy (Ed Helms) to mend his broken heart by unabashedly pursuing the new office receptionist Erin (Ellie Kemper, who joins the cast as a series regular this season).
Lieberstein also ominously hinted that in the second half of the season there will be “trouble with Dunder Mifflin.”

Since I reported that Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) and Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) of NBC’s “The Office” would be married shortly in Niagara Falls, several readers have inquired about attending the filming. Sorry folks, a representative of the show said filming will be on a “closed set.” That is another way of saying it will be a private wedding.

Are Jim and Pam actually going to get married on The Office? — Jill O.
MICKEY: I’m hearing they’ll tie the knot in episode 4. Why the rush? Because Pam doesn’t want anyone to know that she’s expecting. Hilarity ensues when an unlikely party becomes her accidental confidante. (No, not Phyllis.)

Laura in Oakland, Calif.: The Office scoop, please!
We have tons of fabulous Office goodies coming your way soon, but right now, how about some Stanley Hudson info? Leslie David Baker tells us that this season, “You get to see another side of Stanley, more personality, more of him getting along with his coworkers.” While he tires of Michael Scott’s antics, Leslie says: “He’s still not ready to pack it in and leave Dunder Mifflin entirely.” Thank goodness!

Question: I need some Office scoopage! Anything Ausiello, please! –Danny
Ausiello: Anything? Even if it’s just a selection of shameless twitpics from my visit to Dunder Mifflin last week? [from tanster: see August 7 Ausiello Files entry below.] ‘Cause that’s all I got. Actually, that’s not true. I also have this: The show is looking to cast an actress that looks like Daryl (Craig Robinson) from behind. And this: Michael’s going to cultivate some mob ties this season. Or so everyone will think.
August 11: Office Insider
The Insider says they’ve been watching footage of ‘The Office’ and says the Season 6 premiere ‘Gossip’ has one of “the best cold opens ever. Easily top 5.”

Anna in Long Island, N.Y.: Is there any chance for Dwangela on The Office?
The Office writer-producer-actor B.J. Novak tells us, “I love seeing Dwight as Dwight and Angela as Angela. While it was really exciting to see them together, I think there is still so much comedy you can show with Dwight being single, Dwight just being himself and Angela being Angela, so I’m excited to see that for a while. There’s always hope [for them], and the past is always present with everyone. It’s a small office, so all those things build up over time.” Pfft. Dwangela forever!
August 8: The Buffalo News
Greg Daniels … confirmed here Friday that director Paul Fieg is currently in [Niagara] Falls to scout out locations for the wedding.
Daniels said he “assumed” the wedding would take place on the U. S. side of the Falls, but wouldn’t be sure until Fieg finishes his scouting.
“I know the Canadian side is very dramatic,” said Daniels after a news conference with the nation’s television critics on the set of the program. “We’re scouting a lot of different locations.”
“It felt to me that it was in kind of the same spirit of Scranton and the Buffalo branch [of Dunder Mifflin] and the Rust Belt,” said Daniels. “And it has an impressive component to it. It is a little bit undervalued and it worked with our kind of theme — that they decided to go with a kind of kitschy wedding.”
He said “part” of the wedding will be filmed in the Falls and Krasinski and Fischer will be there.
August 7: TV Squad
Lieberstein also mentioned that there will be a Dunder Mifflin shareholders’ meeting.
August 7: E! Online
… the third episode of the season was being filmed today and Jenna was in full bride mode. “I just had a fitting for Pam’s wedding dresses and that was a really special moment. We found one, and I hope it gets approved by the powers that be.”
August 7: KorbiTV
Jim and Pam aren’t the only Dunder-Mifflinites with love on their minds. Daniels also mentioned that Andy’s affection for Erin, Pam replacement at the reception desk, is still in full effect … though Erin (Ellie Kemper) is largely unaware of it.
As for Michael, Lieberstein told us that DM Scranton’s fearless leader has a tough time ahead of him, as there’s really no one in his life romantically right now. He will, however, make the acquaintance of — and possibly move in with — an Italian-American gentleman, who pulls Michael into the mafia.
At least that’s what his employees decide when they see Michael and the Tony Soprano-type together.
As Lieberstein explained, Jim and Pam go off on their honeymoon and with the “coalition of reason” absent from the office, conclusions are made.
August 7: iFMagazine
The upcoming season of the show will focus heavily on the wedding of Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim (John Krasinski) and one of the episodes will actually show the wedding, it will also be an hour long special. The opening episodes of the season will focus on how the wedding and the baby of Jim and Pam will affect those in THE OFFICE …
We will also see that Jim will be challenging himself even harder this season with the wedding, the baby and his work …
As far as Andy goes, he develops a big crush on Erin (Ellie Kemper), who will also be a full member of the cast this year.
As far as episodes go, Michael will meet an Italian-American person that THE OFFICE mistakes for Michael meeting a member of the mafia. Jim and Pam’s baby will develop slowly throughout the season (pun intended) and will make its “debut” in February of 2010 with an hour-long special.
Another hour-long special will be a “clip show” but will feature everyone in character. The producers still they are still trying to figure out how to do this. Other plotlines will include problems at Dunder Mifflin and the higher-ups trying to figure out how the Scanton office continues to generate a profit given Michael’s management style.
There will be about 26 episodes this season.
August 7: Ausiello Files
“It’s going to be a rough year for Michael Scott,” says e.p. Paul Lieberstein, “there’s [no romance] on the horizon for him.”
Office spoiler alert: folks will suspect shortly after Jim/Pam wedding that Michael has gone into business with the mob.
One final Office spoiler: Jim/Pam wedding 4th episode of season. Pam wants to tie knot b4 her family discovers she’s pregnant.
August 6: TV Guide
Pam and Jim from The Office are tying the knot this season, midway through Pam’s pregnancy. Jenna Fischer, who plays Pam, broke the news exclusively to TVGuideMagazine.com, saying she’s being fitted for wedding gowns with room for Pammy’s bump.
“The plan is for Pam and Jim to get married in the fourth episode,” she said from The Office set, where production on Season Six began last week … Fischer said, “It’s going to be a destination wedding, probably in Niagara Falls. By making it a destination wedding, the hope is that nobody from the office will come.”
“We’re keeping it a secret from Michael for a couple reasons,” said Fischer … “First, Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam aren’t married yet, and also, just, you know, it’s Michael Scott we’re dealing with.”
August 6: Ausiello Files
They’re casting the role of Pam’s mom! Here are the deets …
MRS BEESLY: Attractive and in her 50s. A really nice lady who’s very close to her daughter. Down-to-earth with a great sense of humor. Could recur for three or four episodes.
This is kind of weird, right? Didn’t we see Pam’s mom back in Season 2′s Sexual Harassment?
August 6: Buzzsugar
The wedding doesn’t take place within Dunder-Mifflin’s walls … it’ll happen sometime in the Fall … In the first episode, Novak said, we meet some interns who have been at the office all Summer and have just reached their last day at work … Novak said this season’s episodes will largely take place in the office rather than taking the cast on adventures outside Dunder-Mifflin’s walls … Ryan is still “finding his way in the world, as always,” Novak said. His hair is back to brown, but “there may be some mascara involved” in his new look.

We are back to work at The Office. We are currently shooting episode 2. The best part about working on this show is getting to know the answers to all of the cliffhangers 2 months early. It’s good stuff!
The show will pick up in real time. Pam is just out of her first trimester but isn’t really showing yet.

This interview with Ellie has a bit of “kind of spoilerish” stuff about the finale – not much though.

Tanster, do you think maybe NBC’s excitement glands are all dried up after the promotion of the Delivery./Niagara? …..because we got nothing. I would have italicized that if I could….
:(
Tanster, from what you saw, did you like the finale?
[from tanster: yeah, there's some good stuff in tonight's episode. jenna/kathy did this amazing improv during one scene that i hope makes it in!]
This is the weirdest-feeling season finale ever. Where is the anticipation and buildup? Where is the promotion? Nobody anywhere is talking about The Office.
[from tanster: i know, right? not watch with kristin, not ausiello, nobody. :( ]
I have some concern about tomorrow’s episode. No spoilers, no real promotion. Does not feel like a finale. I have a guess that maybe Pam or Jim is the leak, since they don’t seem involved in story plot at moment.
[from tanster: i agree that it is totally weird that NBC hasn't been promoting the finale at all.]
I really hope Holly comes back! She took some getting used to at first, but her and Michael are just perfect…
I really, really, really, hope that “true love for Michael” indicates some Amy Ryan/Holly Flax coming back….
I know Amy isn’t scheduled to come back this season at all, but maybe the episode will end with Michael calling her or something? Cliffhanger, I think yes? :)
That promo might have given us nothing, but Tanster can…she was there! Three days! Time for some hints!
My final guess for the 3 Tanster met is Marcus York, Kathy Bates, and Zach Woods.
Andy playing a big part in the finale? What a surprise.
After further thought, I think Jenna’s comment about a return to real love for Michael may be referring to him reaching out to Holly in the finale, even if we don’t necessarily see her.
Okay, I need a Jan fix, stat. Come home Jan Levenson, and please have your head screwed on straight!
I think this will be the first finale without a Jim/Pam plot….. Are we at least going to see them with Cecelia?
I can only wish for Melora Hardin in the finale, although it could be argued she has really a love/hate with Michael. Amy Ryan would be great too. Thought last season finale was a real letdown.
It is agonizing waiting!
Yes-I agree with needing something spoilery. Please Tanster:)
Well, I think there’s at least two surprises in store for the last couple episodes, that will answer these questions:
1. Why is Michael okay with being Donna’s mistress? Probably means someone from his romantic past is back (and no it’s not Holly).
2. Who is the whistleblower, and what happens to both that person and Sabre after it’s found out.
Oh, and I came up with another guess for the a/r name game: Nancy Carell! If we’re being thorough, we might as well include Carol. Also, maybe tanster just met her on the set ’cause she was visiting Steve with the kids, and it had nothing to do with the episode!
[from tanster: the person i met does have something to do with an episode. :) ]
It seems so quiet over here in Spoilers for this season’s finale. I wonder if they’ve managed to keep any big spoilers tightly under wraps this year? Or maybe there isn’t a big “WOW” moment this year to have to keep top secret? Either way, I can’t wait for the next two episodes! Tanster, when will you be providing us with your on-set visit report? Sorry, I just can’t wait!
Since you saw the last two being filmed Tanster, can you start sharing some spoilers or more hints?
Looks like the printer arc starts with The Cover-Up. The clip that Mindy showed on The Tonight Show, featured Andy asking Kelly about customer complaints regarding faulty printers.
